What is Dopamine

What is dopamine ?

General information: Dopamine is an essential neurotransmitter for your brain and your neurons!

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which actives the dopaminergic receptors. It is produced naturally in the organism.

The quantity of these dopaminergic neurons in the brain is very small. However, dopamine plays a critical modulating key role in various functions such as cognition, behavior, motor functions, motivation, sleeping functions, memory, and reward.

Dopamine is also known as the “molecule of well being”. A lack of dopamine provokes sensations of fatigue, depression, disinterest in life. Less dopamine means also rigidity, less fluent movements or tremors.

What is L-DOPA?

L-DOPA is a natural precursor of dopamine.

What is happening with these dopaminergic neurons with age?

Experts estimate 5-10% the loss of dopaminergic neurons per decade by the age 20. This process can be accelerated by heredity factors (5-10%).

More and more scientific studies suggest an acceleration of destruction of the dopaminergic neurons by exposure to hostile environmental agents (pesticides, toxins, heavy metals).

Another essential factor of premature aging of the dopaminergic neurons is due to free radical exposure destroying these neurons more or less quickly.

Environmental factors can positively or negatively impact destruction. Good or bad healthy lifestyle, nutrition, food supplements are important components for preserving dopaminergic neurons.
